The Catholic Church is a communion (a federation, of sorts) of 24 autonomous self-governing Churches. Each Catholic Church has its own distinctive way of worship and its special spirituality.

Most of these Churches separated at some point in history from the Roman Catholic Church, but have since reunited with the Roman Catholic Church and recognized the Pope of Rome as the rightful Bishop of his See, the Successor of the Apostle Peter, and ‘first among the equal’ hierarchs of all Catholicism.
